Tobago businesses may be forced to seek alternative markets, says chamber boss

Chairman of the Tobago Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, Curtis Williams, says recent tariff challenges with the United States could push local businesses to explore new markets abroad.

Williams told Guardian Media that he knows this is a matter the country will go into negotiations with US about to seek a reduction in tariffs.

But until then, he said the Tobago business community should look beyond traditional trade partners.

“We could look at the Asian market, the African market. We have products that could really fit into these markets,” he said.

He believes that diversifying export destinations will help protect Tobago’s economy from trade disruptions and open up new growth opportunities. Williams encouraged continued dialogue with the US but said it is very important to expand into untapped regions.

As Tobago’s producers face an evolving trade landscape, Williams said he hopes there is a drive to support local businesses in adapting to these changes by broadening their international reach. – Elizabeth Gonzales
