Cigarette trader Carreras Limited will transition to a new managing director on August 1 when the current office holder Franklin Murillo takes up a new position in the wider British American Tobacco Group.

Murrillo is being replaced by Ivan Hurtado, who is the current head of consumer experience for the Latam North and Caribbean region at British American Tobacco, the parent company for Carreras. Hurtado’s appointment is subject to regulatory approval.

Murillo, a Costa Rican, has served as managing director since 2022 when he replaced Trinidadian Raoul Glynn.

When Murrillo took up office, the cigarette trader delivered profit of $3.6 billion from $16.2 billion in revenue for the financial year ended March 2023. Carreras, which recently adjusted its yearly accounting period to terminate in December, earned profit of $6.2 billion from revenue of $19.5 billion for the financial year ending December 2024.

During Murillo’s tenure, the company launched vape products to widen its revenue stream and continued to invest in deepening its distribution channels.
