Police are investigating the murder of 25-year-old Antonio “Tonio” Flowers, a tour guide from Rivas Estate in Dangriga. Flowers was shot on Sunday night while walking in the Antelope Street area of Belize City, heading towards Sister Mary Benedict Street. Police say a masked man approached Flowers from behind and fired several shots before escaping along Sister Mary Benedict Street. Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero gave an update on the investigation.
ACP Hilberto Romero, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “On Sunday, 27th of September, 2026, around 9:30 PM, police responded to a shooting on Antelope Street in Belize City. Upon arrival, learned that a male person was shot and taken to the KHMH for treatment. He was identified as Antonio Flowers, 25 years of a Dangriga address. Information is that he was walking on the street when he was followed by a mail person who pulled out a firearm and fired several shots towards his direction, causing his fatal injuries. We are reviewing cameras in the area this time to try to establish a suspect for this murder.”
Reporter: Is he known to police?
ACP Hilberto Romero, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Yes, he’s known to police. He had been dealt with with crimes in the past.”
Flowers was also a familiar face on the basketball court. He played forward for the EZ Investments Dangriga Dream Ballers in the Belize Premier Basketball League, wearing number seven during the 2025 season. Carolyn Jang, the team’s Public Relations Officer, spoke about what his death means to the Dream Ballers.
Carolyn Jang, PR, Dangriga Dream Ballers: “Antonio was a very dedicated person to the sport. Whenever he came off the bench or whenever he started, he always ensured that he did his best, his utmost best to assist the team in achieving the win. And when we had those losses, he was always the one who would look back and if it was his fault, he would take full accountability and do his utmost best for the next game coming after. It’s honestly shocking for us because we didn’t expect something like this and we’re kind of speechless and we don’t know what to say at this point. We also got close and he is a very sweet person. He’s one that I could have counted on to call him for anything that I needed his help with. He was that kind of person and it’s just so hard. Antonio may have had his faults but under that whenever it came to the team and the other people that he loved he was always there for them to help them and just be there for them.”
Reporter: Is the team planning to do any memorial service for him anything?
Carolyn Jang, PR, Dangriga Dream Ballers: “Well it’s still early to see at this point we need to meet with the others to discuss what is going to be planned if something is going to be planned.”
Police have not disclosed a motive, and no arrest has been reported.
