Transport Ministry Hires Former Police Officer and Magistrate Dervin Sambula as Legal Counsel

The Ministry of Transportation has also hired former police officer and magistrate Dervin Sambula as its legal counsel.  Love News understands that Sambula was appointed more than a year ago. Before entering the legal field, he served in the Belize Police Department and rose to the rank of Assistant Superintendent. He later served as a magistrate.  CEO Chester Williams says Sambula’s experience in policing, the courts and law makes him well suited for the job.

Chester Williams, CEO, Ministry of Transport: “Mr. Sambula comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience having served in the police department many years, rose to the rank of Assistant Superintendent. He was the legal advisor at the Police Department as well and his years of experience as police and legal training is something that really and truly complements us at the Ministry and certainly the Department of Transport. We are grateful to have him as a part of our staff. He is very much active out there with the officers. He’s not a person who stays in office. He’s out there making sure that he provides legal guidance to the officers as they perform their duties. He applied and let me make it clear I did not choose him. Mr.Sambula was chosen by the Judicial and Legal Services Commission. As you know he’s a legal officer, it’s no the CEO who decides who is a legal officer in any ministry. That goes to the Judicial and Legal Services Commission after having applied and they decide if they’re hiring the person and where to put that person.” 

As legal counsel, Sambula advises the ministry on legal matters connected to transportation, traffic enforcement and its day-to-day work.  Williams says Sambula’s background gives him a practical understanding of both enforcement and the legal process.
