Trial Date Set For Man Accused Of 2023 Belize City Murder

A trial date has been set for 25-year-old Lyson James Cacho, who is accused of the 2023 murder of Belize City resident Jordan Waight.  Cacho appeared in the High Court yesterday for the conclusion of his Case Management Conference (CMC), where he was informed that his murder trial will commence on April 13. The matter will be heard before Justice Candace Nanton in a trial by judge alone, without a jury.  Cacho is represented by Attorney Ian Gray and has been on remand at the Belize Central Prison since he was charged with the offense.  Police formally charged Cacho with murder on May 6, 2024, approximately six months after the fatal shooting of Jordan Waight. When he first appeared before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on that charge, bail was denied due to the seriousness of the offense, and he has remained in custody since that time.  According to police reports, the incident occurred on November 23, 2023, shortly after 9:00 a.m. on Barbara Harris Street in Belize City.  Investigators say that Jordan Waight, a 23-year-old labourer of Police Street, was walking along Barbara Harris Street heading toward Lacroix Boulevard when he was ambushed from behind by a lone gunman.  Police say the suspect was described as a dark-complexioned man of medium build with dreadlocks, dressed in a red shirt and riding a bicycle. The assailant reportedly fired a single shot, striking Waight in the head.  Waight collapsed at the scene and was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.  Authorities detained Cacho on May 2, 2024, and he was formally charged with Waight’s murder several days later.  Court records also show that Cacho had previously been charged in 2015 in connection with the murder of Michael Welch and the attempted murder of Kingsley Morrison. In that incident, Welch and Morrison were reportedly ambushed while at Morrison’s residence on Periwinkle Street, where Welch later succumbed to his injuries while Morrison survived.
