Trinidad and Tobago cancels Independence Day Parade

The Government of Trinidad and Tobago has announced that this year’s Independence Day Parade and official functions will be replaced with a National Day of Prayer and Reflection on August 31 due to the ongoing State of Emergency.

The latest SOE was declared on July 17 in response to mounting intelligence about an expansive organised crime syndicate operating both inside and outside the nation’s prison system. Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro said the decision followed troubling intelligence reports received detailing a coordinated criminal network involving gang leaders, some of whom are incarcerated.

The SOE was extended for three months on July 29 after authorities warned that the threat of a plot to kill key government officials and attack public institutions still exists.

The Ministry of Homeland Security explained that the decision to cancel this year’s Independence Day Parade followed “careful deliberation on intelligence arising out of the State of Emergency.” The National Day of Prayer and Reflection “will bring together citizens of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, of all faiths and backgrounds, to unite, and to seek guidance and strength during this challenging time, as well as to reflect on where we are as a nation and the way forward.”

The Ministry noted that there is precedent for canceling the Independence Day Parade, citing 2020 and 2021 when public health concerns due to COVID-19 prevented celebrations. “The Government has, however, chosen to commemorate the occasion of our 63rd Independence with a National Day of Prayer and Reflection,” the statement said.

In line with security priorities, the Government also announced the cancellation of the state-sponsored fireworks display. Permits will be issued “solely for the sale and use of ‘Silent’ Fireworks for private displays,” the Ministry added, explaining that this policy “aims to limit noise disturbances, particularly for vulnerable persons, pets and their owners whilst also supporting the peace and stability necessary during the State of Emergency.”

Citizens are encouraged to take part in the National Day of Prayer and Reflection on August 31, using the occasion to unite, reflect, and seek strength for the challenges ahead.
