Trinidad and Tobago’s energy minister, Stuart Young, has defended the oil deal between state-owned Paria Fuel Trading Company and Jamaica’s Petrojam Limited.
The Rowley government is facing mounting criticism over the deal.
The 500,000 barrels Minister Young referenced is half of the total expected shipment under the year-long deal.
He emphasised that none of the imported fuel is intended for domestic consumption.
According to the Trinidad and Tobago’s energy minister, the Petrojam deal is advantageous as it offers fuel at a more competitive price.

Paria initially requested a waiver from the Council for Trade and Economic Development, COTED to import fuel from outside CARICOM. However, the request was not granted.
