Triple Murder Trial Delayed as Prosecutors Introduce New Cellphone Evidence

The triple murder trial of thirty-one-year-old Christian Espat and twenty-five-year-old Michael Brown has been postponed until January after the prosecution sought to introduce additional cellphone evidence. The trial was scheduled to begin on yesterday before Justice Nigel Pilgrim in the High Court. Both men face charges arising from a shooting in San Pedro in 2023 that killed three-year-old Amarie Esmeralda Rodriguez, Carlos Leonardo Chi and Delmar Rodriguez.  Espat and Brown were initially indicted on nine counts: three counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder and three counts of use of deadly means of harm. The latter charges concern injuries to Jose Hernandez, Ruben Guerra and Randy Guerra.  The prosecution told the court that the additional evidence emerged following discussions with a witness. Defence attorneys objected to its late introduction, saying they had been prepared to proceed with the trial.  Espat is represented by Dickie Bradley and Leeroy Banner, while Doctor Lynden Jones represents Brown. Jones raised concerns about the number of photographs disclosed and dates associated with the digital material. He argued that the defence needed time to have an expert examine the evidence.  Justice Pilgrim allowed the prosecution to introduce the material, saying relevant digital evidence could help establish or disprove the allegations against the accused men. However, he determined that another case management conference would be necessary before the trial could begin.  That hearing is set for December 3, with the trial now scheduled for January 19 through to 29, 2027.  Justice Pilgrim also invited defence attorneys to apply to the High Court for bail on behalf of both men. Espat and Brown remain on remand at the Belize Central Prison.
