More than 600 young people across Trinidad and Tobago will take part in a new national internship launched by TSTT. The Future Leaders Internship Programme, unveiled at Queen’s Park Oval on July 31, is aimed at citizens aged 17 to 21 who are not employed or enrolled in full-time tertiary education.

The three-week programme, which runs from August 11 to 30, will combine virtual and in-person training focused on digital literacy, career exposure, and workplace skills. Participants will be placed across five streams tied to TSTT’s operations: technical, sales, customer service, support services, and quality assurance.

Each intern will receive a financial stipend.

TSTT Acting CEO Keino Cox described the initiative as part of a broader strategy to build a more inclusive workforce.

“This $2 million investment builds on our track record of giving back,” he said. “These are not short-term interventions. This is part of a longer arc of investment.”

Acting Vice President of Operations and Administration Debra Thomas said the initiative targets young people who might not otherwise access training opportunities.

“I can say with confidence that programmes like these play a critical role in shaping the future workforce — not just for TSTT, but for Trinidad and Tobago,” she said.

Public Utilities Minister Barry Padarath, who delivered the feature address, said the programme could have a wide impact.

“This initiative creates a pathway for young people—from Matelot to Point Fortin—who may not have ordinarily had access to opportunities like this,” he said.

Education Minister Dr Michael Dowlat, Permanent Secretary Neela Ram-Atwaroo, and members of TSTT’s board also attended. Applications open on August 4 at www.tsttinternship.com.
