TTPS Police Academy to launch degree in policing

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) Police Academy has announced the introduction of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Policing. The academic programme is designed to enhance professional development and improve law enforcement education within the TTPS.

The Police Academy is the first of its kind in Trinidad and Tobago to be registered with the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago. The new programme is being led by Dean Nicole Robinson under the guidance of Provost Dr. Simon Alexis.

The degree aligns with the TTPS Strategic Plan 2025–2027, specifically Strategic Priority number two: Organizational Development, and Outcome #5: Enhanced Professional Development. This outcome aims to increase employee satisfaction through expanded training opportunities.

A stakeholder session was held on 22nd July, 2025, to present the programme’s vision, curriculum framework, needs assessment results, and implementation strategy. The session also featured the viewing of a video on the history of the Police Academy, produced by the Library and Information Services Unit.

Attendees at the session included Deputy Commissioner of Police Natasha George, who served as feature speaker, Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr. Andre Norton, Provost Dr. Simon Alexis, Senior Superintendent Ian Carty, Border Security Affairs Specialist and Training Coordinator CARICOM IMPACS Jocelyn Hughes, Criminologist Educator Dr. Ayinka Nurse-Carrington, Manager of Occupational Standards and Sector Support at the National Training Agency Avenash Ramsoobhag, and National Drug Council representative Keel County.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Natasha George stated that the initiative represents progress in realizing one of the Police Service’s key strategic goals. Provost Dr. Simon Alexis referred to the initiative as a milestone in policing education, noting that it will equip officers with advanced skills to meet evolving demands. Dean Nicole Robinson emphasized the academic and professional opportunities the programme would offer, adding that it strengthens the TTPS’s dedication to lifelong learning.

The TTPS Bachelor’s in Policing programme is expected to serve as a regional model in the advancement of policing education and the development of informed communities.
