Health officials are seeking to reassure parents and students after a confirmed case of tuberculosis was identified at Edward P. Yorke High School in Belize City. Authorities report that a sixteen-year-old female student tested positive on February 14. As a precautionary measure, classmates have been tested and were required to wear masks while attending school. The results of those screenings are expected within three days as contact tracing continues. Director of Public Health and Wellness, Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, says Belize maintains a strong tuberculosis monitoring and treatment program and the situation is being managed according to established protocols.
Dr. Musa explained that the country records only a small number of tuberculosis patients annually, but the diagnosis still carries significant stigma. She reminded the public that protection begins early through the BCG vaccine administered within the first week after birth. Belize traditionally maintained vaccination coverage above ninety-five percent, though uptake has declined to about ninety percent in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. Health officials say surveillance at the school continues while awaiting test results and are encouraging the public to remain calm as preventative measures remain in place
