Chairman of the JLP’s campaign committee, Dr. Christopher Tufton, has taken the PNP’s Peter Bunting to task over his approach to crime-fighting and public security.
Bunting is quoted as saying the JLP has taken a warrior approach to crime, while the PNP would take a guardian approach.
But Dr. Tufton says that mindset reveals why Bunting was unable to break the back of serious crimes during his tenure as Security Minister.
Mahiri Stewart has more in this report.
The governing JLP has emphasized the 43-percent reduction in murders recorded so far this year.
The party credits its investments in infrastructure, intelligence gathering and security personnel for the dramatic reduction.
It’s a course the JLP says should be maintained if the country is to continue to realise gains in the security arena.
Dr. Tufton says Peter Bunting’s approach to crime fighting is misguided.
The JLP campaign chair accused Bunting of being condescending towards the police, who he says have been doing their best to tackle the country’s crime problem.
According to Tufton, a strong approach is needed to combat the levels of crime that have plagued the Jamaican society.
The JLP campaign chair criticised Bunting’s track record as Security Minister, pointing to the now infamous plea he made for divine intervention.
According to Dr. Tufton, the JLP has not only relied on the divine, but it has also put in the work to achieve results.
Dr. Tufton urged voters to stick with the JLP as the proven party that can deliver reductions in serious crimes.
