Two men were arrested in San Fernando after police responded to a report of cable theft in the Cross Crossing district early Tuesday morning.
According to a media release issued on Wednesday, officers attached to the San Fernando Police Station received information at approximately 5 am about persons allegedly stealing cables in the vicinity of the Unipet Gas Station, Cross Crossing.
When officers arrived at the location, they reportedly observed four men dressed in dark-coloured clothing handling several lengths of cable.
Police said that upon seeing the marked police vehicle, two of the men fled the scene on foot. Another man reportedly ran towards a silver Nissan AD Wagon parked nearby.
Officers immediately approached and detained the suspect. A search of the vehicle allegedly led to the discovery of a bolt cutter and a hacksaw, both of which were seized as part of the investigation.
The driver of the vehicle was also detained.
The suspects were later identified as a 27-year-old man from Orchid Gardens, Pleasantville, and a 51-year-old man from Cedar Hill, Princes Town.
Police said both men were informed of the ongoing investigation, cautioned, arrested and taken to the San Fernando Police Station. The vehicle, lengths of cable and cutting tools were also conveyed to the station.
Representatives of TSTT were subsequently contacted and attended the station to assist investigators and conduct an assessment of the value of the recovered cables.
The operation was carried out by Woman Sergeant Boodoo, Police Constable Hosein and Police Constable Cooper.
