Police in San Pedro Town have charged two men with attempted murder following a violent incident that occurred on November 16. According to police, the charges stem from a robbery in which the two men allegedly targeted a local store, brutally assaulting the shopkeeper before setting the building on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. Investigators say the fire was deliberately lit after the attack. Assistant Superintendent of Police Stacy Smith told reporters that the swift response by the Belize Fire Service proved critical to the investigation. Firefighters were able to quickly contain the blaze, allowing police to recover and salvage surveillance footage from the store.
According to ASP Smith, investigations are ongoing as the matter moves before the courts.
