The Belize Coast Guard is celebrating a milestone after two of its officers became the organization’s first certified dive instructors. Rear Admiral Gregory Soberanis says the accomplishment marks a significant step forward for the Coast Guard’s diving program and reflects the dedication and professionalism of its personnel. Soberanis notes that having two certified instructors will strengthen in-house training capabilities, reduce dependence on external trainers, and help expand the Coast Guard’s operational readiness.

Gregory Soberanis, Commandant, Belize Coast Guard: “This is key for us. We conduct numerous dive operations throughout the year. And so having that level of skill really elevates our ability to not only respond but to conduct in-house training. The dives that we do in the Coast Guard are not sport dive. You know, they are law enforcement dives, they are security dives, and so there is a certain level of risk that’s involved, that is separate and apart from our recreational dive. I must say thanks to our training officers, Lieutenant Commander Bellini and Lieutenant Otto Garcia, who work closely with Mr. John Searle from Sea Sport I believe the course was for about two to three weeks, if I’m not mistaken. And from what I’ve been told, it was pretty intense. Not only are we certified now as dive instructors but we also have divers who are trained combat divers as well. So when you augment the combat diving component, along with what they’ve acquired now will definitely enhance our ability to be more effective and efficient when it comes to or dive operations.”
The certification is being hailed as both a personal accomplishment for the officers and an important investment in the future of the Belize Coast Guard.
