Two Immigration Nationality Certificates Still Missing

More than two months after discrepancies were discovered at the Immigration Department’s Belmopan office, two official nationality certificates remain unaccounted for.  The matter was first reported by Love News in May, after the Ministry confirmed that an internal review had identified two missing certificates bearing specific serial numbers. At the time, investigators had not determined whether the documents were misprinted, misplaced or stolen.  Immigration Minister Kareem Musa had explained that the Ministry was reviewing its records dating back to October 2025, when the batch containing the certificates was opened. The review was intended to determine whether either document had been used to obtain a Belizean passport.  At the time, the ministry expressed intention to circulate the serial numbers locally and through Interpol because of concerns that the certificates could potentially be used in Belize or abroad. Musa had said that any passport obtained through the unauthorized use of the documents would be cancelled.  Minister Musa has now provided an update, confirming that the two certificates have still not been located and outlining the status of the investigation.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Immigration: “Those have not been located as yet. Like I mentioned a few months ago we did place them on Interpol notice, red notice for them and so we have not come across them as yet but as soon as we do I will give you an update.”

Nationality certificates are sensitive government documents because they establish a person’s status as a Belizean citizen and may be used when applying for a passport or accessing other official services.
