The cooperative movement in southern Belize is gaining fresh momentum following the formal induction of two new groups in the Stann Creek District earlier today. The Southern Agro Tourism Society Limited and the Dangriga Indigenous Farmers’ Cooperative were officially registered and welcomed into the national cooperative framework during a ceremony that highlighted growing efforts to empower community-based enterprise and sustainable livelihoods. The event was guided by Registrar of Cooperatives, Gareth Murillo, who outlined the rigorous process required for registration. He explained that becoming a cooperative involves organizing members under a shared economic goal, adopting formal governance structures, and meeting strict legal and administrative requirements set out by the department.
Murillo emphasized that the induction is not just ceremonial, but a significant step that positions both cooperatives to contribute meaningfully to local economic development, particularly in agriculture and tourism. Area Representative for Stann Creek West, Rodwell Ferguson, also welcomed the milestone, describing it as a boost for grassroots development in the district.
Also present as a guest speaker at today’s event was the Area Rep for Dangriga, Dr. Louis Zabaneh. /
