TWO tragedies have marred the New Year’s holiday, leaving one guest at the Hilton Trinidad suspected to have fallen to his death and a ten-month-old baby drowning in Diego Martin.

In the first incident, 36-year-old Jonathan Claude, from Cyprus, was found dead at the Hilton Trinidad, from what police suspect was a fall from a terrace six storeys high.

Police are still investigating details surrounding the man’s death but reports said the man fell to his death at about 8 am.

Police later got reports of ten-month-old baby Alya Amalia Ramjit’s death at about 3 pm on January 1.

The child’s father told police he went into his house at about 3 pm to get lotion and left the child in the care of her 55-year-old grandmother.

When he returned he noticed that the grandmother was sitting alone and asked where the child was. When the grandmother was unable to tell him where she was he went to the southern side of the house and found the child floating face-down in a four-foot pool.

He took the child out of the water and, with the assistance of a friend tried to resuscitate her, but their efforts were futile. She was pronounced dead at 4.15 pm.
