The United Democratic Party (UDP) has issued congratulations to the people of Gales Point “Manatee,” Malanti, and the wider Kriol community following the successful inscription of the Krismus Bram and Sambai traditions on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
UDP Leader Tracy Panton described the recognition as a proud moment for Belize, saying the listing affirms the cultural richness, resilience, and global importance of Kriol heritage. She noted that the achievement provides new opportunities to strengthen cultural preservation efforts, support heritage-based livelihoods, and empower rural communities such as Gales Point, which have safeguarded these traditions for generations. Panton also paid special tribute to the late Myrna Manzanares, recognized for her lifelong dedication to preserving and teaching Kriol culture, and to her mother, Iris Abraham, whose advocacy helped keep these traditions alive within the community.
UDP’s Patrick Faber also commented on the recognition, recalling the commitment shown to support Myrna Manzanares and the Krismus Bram and Sambai traditions during his time in office. Faber said that when he, as the Minister of Culture, approved government payments for Manzanares’ house for her cultural work, he faced political attacks from the ruling People’s United Party. Today, he maintains, however that the assistance was justified given her role as a cultural educator and key figure in sustaining Kriol heritage.
The Belize delegation that represented the country at UNESCO included Arreini Palacio Morgan, Secretary General of the National Commission of Belize; Rolando Cocom, Director of the Institute for Social and Cultural Research (ISCR-NICH); April Martinez, Living Heritage Officer, ISCR-NICH; Selene Solis, representative of the National Kriol Council; Emith Young, Master Drummer of Gales Point Village; and Sharlene Andrewin, Master Dancer of Gales Point Village
