As we noted earlier, the United Democratic Party held a press conference this morning in which the party spoke of several matters of national interest. Aside from the ongoing acquisition gripes, the opposition also addressed the unsolved taking of Joseph Budna in August last year in Orange Walk Town. It has been close to six months since he was forcibly taken to Guatemala where he was wanted. The abduction contradicts proper protocols, a situation that the opposition has been clamoring with the government to address. UDP Chairman Sheena Pitts spoke on this pending investigation and the lack of movement by the Police and the government.

Sheena Pitts, UDP Chairwoman: “And I’m grateful to every other Belizean who is able to separate the apples from the oranges when it comes to this topic. Because this is not about a man who they say is a rapist of boys. All of us in all of our families have a thief, have a liar, have persons who live alternative lifestyles. This is not about that. When the state becomes a threat to the people. Who is next? In Belize, I want to invite you to look through a sequence of events, three I will point out, where you will see the serious constitutional concerns about the expanding reach of state power and the shrinking space for lawful expression, protest and independent journalism. The first one, who thief Budna? Are we really still asking that? We know who thief the man, the state thief the man. But what you all wanna hear is which one of them. I want you to understand what is unsettling is not the man, not what he has been accused and judged for, but the fact that the state deployed its arm on its citizen. That is what is at play here. Don’t let anyone rent space in your head that this is about a pedophile. Pedophiles are in our families.”
