UDP Says Mira Leave of Absence Falls Short of Accountability

The United Democratic Party has now joined the National Trade Union Congress of Belize in calling for immediate removal of Oscar Mira from Cabinet, arguing that the minister’s decision to take administrative leave does not go far enough. While acknowledging the Government’s decision to place Mira on leave pending an audit, the UDP argued that administrative leave should not be viewed as accountability. The party contends that Prime Minister John Briceño should move beyond the temporary arrangement and formally remove Mira from Cabinet responsibilities while an independent investigation is carried out.  The UDP also voiced support for the NTUCB’s demands for a comprehensive review of the awarding of contracts, payment approval processes and any actions that may have been taken to circumvent financial controls, procurement regulations or treasury oversight mechanisms. The statement concludes by asserting that Prime Minister Briceño now faces what it describes as a test of leadership, with the party insisting that Belizeans are demanding answers, transparency and meaningful action as the audit and investigations move forward.
