Uncertain Political Future Marks Start of 2025 – Analysts

Analysts say the country starts the new year with a largely uncertain political future, with just nine months to go before general elections are due.

The analysts believe the uncertainty is as a result of multiple competing issues which they say could affect the outcome of the election.

Among the most prominent are the personal popularity of the prime minister and the failure of the opposition People’s National Party, PNP, to outline a clear vision for the future.

Political analysts believe there’s still room for both parties to win over the electorate.

Former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Lloyd B. Smith, says the political winds could still shift in any direction.

Recent polls have shown Prime Minister Holness losing popular support to Opposition Leader Mark Golding. Golding’s PNP has also managed to close the gap with the governing party.

Trade unionist, Helene Davis Whyte says the JLP fortunes may rise and fall with Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

She says the JLP must do more to combat the perception of corruption.

Financial analyst Dennis Chung says voters will be paying close attention to Holness’ high stakes legal challenge to the Integrity Commission’s report into his financial affairs when making up their minds.

The case will get underway in the Supreme Court next Tuesday, January 7.

Both parties have indicated they’ve started the process of fine tuning their party machinery ahead of the expected electoral contest.
