University of Belize applies for international accreditation

The University of Belize (UB) has formally applied to become a candidate for international institutional accreditation.  UB submitted its application to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, known as SACSCOC. The submission represents an early but significant stage in the accreditation process; it does not mean that UB has already received candidacy or accreditation. The university says the application follows several years of work to strengthen its academic and administrative systems. The process included improvements to its institutional-effectiveness framework, faculty credentialing, academic and administrative policies, and quality-assurance mechanisms.  UB President Dr. Vincent Palacio described the submission as a historic milestone for the national university. He says the changes are intended to position UB to meet internationally recognized standards and advance its goal of becoming an accredited institution.  SACSCOC will now conduct a comprehensive review of the application before deciding whether UB qualifies for candidacy. If approved, the university would proceed to the next phase of the accreditation process.  UB says achieving accreditation could strengthen the credibility and quality of its programmes while expanding opportunities for students and faculty. No timeline has been announced for SACSCOC’s decision.
