Also at today’s BTIA annual general meeting, U.S. Ambassador André Bauer also spoke about his approach to working with Belize’s political leaders. Bauer said he intends to remain nonpartisan and has been meeting with people across the political spectrum since taking office.
He said those conversations are part of understanding the country and strengthening the relationship between Belize and the United States, regardless of party affiliation.
André Bauer, US Ambassador to Belize: “I’ve spoken to Tracy a couple times just in casual, I shouldn’t address her as that, but I feel like she can call me by my first name as well.”
Reporter: You can start that over if you want.
André Bauer, US Ambassador to Belize: “It doesn’t bother me. So with me, it’s not about parties. When I served in elected office, of course I ran under a party leadership, but I noticed that a lot of times some of the biggest issues I was able to get past, I worked with folks on the other side of the aisle because people and issues aren’t partisan. What people want at the end of the day, they don’t care about how government works, they care about what government does. And so I think quite too often folks worry about the label and not about what we’re supposed to be up there doing. And so I think there’s a lot more that unites us than divides us no matter what side of the aisle you’re on. I’m non-partisan in this position. I feel like this is not supposed to be a partisan job. And so whether you’re in the leadership or not in the leadership, if you can do something that I think helps the people of our country or Belize or improves their lifestyle, I’m gonna work with anybody from any party or no party if they can do that.”
André Bauer formally took office as U.S. Ambassador to Belize on September 7, 2026, when he presented his credentials to Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam. He had arrived in Belize on September 4.
