US investigators probe into the killing of a Belizean woman in California

A Belizean woman who migrated to the United States was killed on Thursday night in the Westmont area of the Los Angeles County.  Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) homicide detectives are actively investigating the incident, which took place just before nine o’clock in the 1200 block of West 87th Street. To date, authorities have not released any information regarding a potential motive for the shooting, nor have they provided details about any suspects. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office has identified Turton but has not yet officially listed her cause of death.  Initially, authorities reported that Turton had been shot, but a later investigation by the Los Angeles Medical Examiner confirmed that she died from multiple stab wounds. Yesterday a local LA News blog reported that despite the stabbing occurring almost a week ago, the Police have been tight-lipped.  As a result, the community is calling for action.

“This sister here is from Belize but she’s an advocate and activist and was  an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, hired black in her community, gave back to her community. So she will be remembered, gone and never ever forgotten. As the news comes out I want to say sorry to the family. I was so busy with all these other things that are going on. I was working another  homicide yesterday there in LeMur. So I doubled back on this and looked on the City News Service wire and got in touch with a friend of mine and he actually sent me an article. Thank you Brother B for doing that too and everybody’s concerned that this is not getting out or have enough attention in the community or maybe the family don’t want it to come out but this is one of our leaders or entrepreneur or biggest example on getting the business and thriving in a community, her own community from Belize to  obviously South Central LA, well established peppers. She owned it and she was obviously killed on 87th near Budlong.”

The 30-year-old, Joeline Turton was living in California where she owned and managed the restaurant, Peppers Jamaican Cuisine in the South Los Angeles area.  According to a news agency in Los Angeles, the news of Turton’s homicide sent shockwaves through the local community, particularly among those who frequented the restaurant. It added that the establishment was known for its authentic Belizean flavors and warm atmosphere, the restaurant was a popular gathering spot especially for Belizeans and Caribbean nationals in the area.
