US Youth Ambassadors Return to Belize

Belize is once again benefiting from the passion and commitment of its young leaders. Today, members of the U.S. Youth Ambassadors program have returned to the country, not out of obligation, but by choice, to complete a community service project that is already making a measurable impact nationwide.  In a move that organizers describe as both intentional and inspiring, the third cohort of U.S. Youth Ambassadors chose Belize as the site for their community initiative, even though participants traditionally implement their projects in their home country, the United States.  Their decision has translated into tangible support on the ground. Through the ambassadors’ efforts, twelve young Belizean entrepreneurs each received one-thousand-dollar grants to help expand and strengthen their small businesses.  The group’s outreach also extended into the education and health sectors, with health and safety supplies distributed to forty-three schools across the country, an intervention aimed at improving student wellbeing and supporting safer learning environments.  Executive Director of the Love Foundation, Vinessa Sweeny, says the return of this third cohort is especially encouraging.

Program mentors say the initiative represents months of planning, collaboration, and relationship-building between youth leaders in the United States and partners here in Belize.  Mentor of the U.S. Youth Ambassadors, Viviene Lin, explained the process that brought the group to this milestone moment.

Organizers say the project underscores a powerful message, that today’s young people are not waiting for the future to lead, but are already investing time, resources, and energy into the communities they care about.  The Youth Leadership Awards Luncheon and related activities were held today in Belize City as part of the ongoing “Exchange to Action” youth leadership initiative./
