USF Deploying Starlink Satellite to Western Communities

The Universal Service Fund (USF) is deploying Starlink satellite-based internet systems to provide immediate broadband coverage in key communities in western Jamaica.

Energy, Transport and Telecommunications Minister, Hon. Daryl Vaz, said the USF’s seven public Wi-Fi hubs and 112 community Wi-Fi hotspots in the western region are down due to hurricane damage, power loss and internet service provider (ISP) disruption.

He was addressing Thursday’s (October 30) press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister in Kingston.

The use of Starlink satellite is an interim measure being employed to facilitate communication in affected communities while terrestrial infrastructure is being restored.

“We all know how important communication is at a time like this. We have people who still have not been able to make contact with their families, their loved ones, their friends, and road access is still not possible, so you can imagine the deep sense of worry that is widespread across Jamaica,” he said.

In addition, installation of solar-powered hubs that can support Wi-Fi access and device charging for residents is being undertaken.

Turning to telecommunications, Minister Vaz said Flow Jamaica has reported that 30 per cent of its sites are operational, with urban areas showing better performance. Kingston is at 65 per cent, St. Thomas, 75 per cent, and St. Andrew, 63 per cent.
