Venezuelan national in court for Karim’s kidnapping

A Venezuelan national appeared in court yesterday, charged with receiving a $93,000 ransom in relation to the kidnapping of Jankie Satie Karim.

Esdra Isiac Salazar Cova was denied bail by Master Delicia Bethelemy at the San Fernando Masters Court. He was charged by PC Cadette of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit with knowingly receiving a ransom of $93,000 on July 19 related to Karim’s kidnapping.

The 44-year-old mother of one was snatched by armed men as she headed to her home at Anoop Street, Bassie Street Extension, Spring Village, Valsayn, on July 13.

The prosecution was represented by Insp Ramdeo Sookdeo and Sgt Reagan Ramanan, both attorneys. The matter was adjourned to January 13, 2026.

Karim was rescued on July 21 by a team of police officers led by Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro. The rescue took place in a beach house in Rampanalgas, Toco. Karim was held captive for eight days.

Earlier this week, a 37-year-old dentist from Central Trinidad was released from police custody after investigators were probing if the money he had in his possession was in any way linked to the kidnapping.

Last week, 21-year-old Leandro Mohansingh was also charged in connection with Karim’s kidnapping and denied bail. She was arrested, and her companion was killed after police officers stormed a house at Rampanalgas and rescued Karim.

A second man, also believed to be involved in the woman’s kidnapping, was killed hours later by police at his Piarco home.
