Tenor saxophonist, Glen DaCosta is the special guest this evening Herbie Miller Presents Friday Night Jazz at the F&B Green Kamila’s Kitchen in Downtown Kingston. DaCosta, a session and touring musician with Bob Marley and the Wailers, recorded the albums ‘Kaya’ and ‘Exodus’ at Basing St., London, in 1976, leaving an indelible mark on the music of that era.

Glen DaCosta, the venerable tenor saxophonist who co-founded the band Zap Pow with his Alpharian schoolmate David Madden, will demonstrate his ability at home in Jamaica. He stars this week’s Herbie Miller Presents Friday Night Jazz at the F&B Green Kamila’s Kitchen in Downtown Kingston , from 7:30 to 8:30 p. m. and from 9 to 10 p.m.

DaCosta is an unacknowledged pioneer of ska and reggae music, but that is not to suggest those are the only styles within which he has performed. Stints with the Sonny Bradshaw Big Band and various combos at home and abroad, including Gladys Knight and The Pips, and UB, 40 distinguished him as a versatile saxophonist, showcasing his ability to adapt to different musical styles and collaborate with a wide range of artistes.

The youthful octogenarian toured and recorded with a who’s who in Jamaican music, a testament to his significant role in the industry. It is alarming that his reputation circulates primarily among fellow musicians and the cognoscenti of musical circles. DaCosta’s most high-profile appearances were as a session and touring musician with Bob Marley and the Wailers. He recorded the albums Kaya and Exodus at Basing St London in 1976, leaving an indelible mark on the music of that era.

DaCosta’s professional time abroad has cultivated a dedicated following among a solid group of fans from a generation that tracked the singers with whom he performed as a first-call musician.

With the all-around keyboardist, Pau ‘Nattykeyz’ Dangla; Sherwayne Thompson on bass; and Obed Davis on drums; the evening promises to be memorable.
