Nearly two decades after their rivalry split dancehall into Gaza and Gully factions, Jamaican icons Vybz Kartel and Mavado are preparing to share the stage again in what is already being billed as one of the most historic moments in modern dancehall. The legendary rivals will headline a Gaza vs Gully showdown at Reggae Sumfest on July 18, 2026, at Plantation Cove in St Ann, before taking the spectacle overseas for Freedom Street Malta 2026 in September. For fans across the Caribbean and the global dancehall community, the reunion revives one of the genre’s most defining rivalries.
The announcement from Sumfest organisers ignited immediate buzz online. In a statement posted to social media, promoters teased the scale of the moment: “A decade of rivalry… a lifetime of hits… and now the energy of two legends meeting on one stage in a moment set to shake dancehall history. Eighteen years in the making.” The July performance will serve as the centrepiece of this year’s Sumfest staging and marks the second consecutive year Kartel will headline the festival after drawing more than 30,000 patrons in 2025, where he was famously crowned the new King of Dancehall by Spice.
Meanwhile, the rivalry is also heading to Europe. Promoters of Freedom Street Malta have already confirmed two Gaza vs Gully nights between September 10 and 13, with early ticket demand proving massive. The event, expected to attract fans from across Europe and the diaspora, will revive the competitive spirit that dominated late-2000s dancehall and produced some of the genre’s most iconic anthems.
Industry figures have already begun reacting to the announcement. American producer and media personality DJ Khaled publicly celebrated the moment, writing online, “It’s time for more history.” For longtime followers of dancehall, the reunion signals more than nostalgia. Eighteen years after a clash that defined a generation, the Gaza and Gully camps are once again preparing for a moment that could reshape the culture all over again.
