On Monday February 23, Lauderhill City officials honored Vybz Kartel, Beenie Man, Busy Signal, Spragga Benz and Wayne Wonder with citations for their charitable work during the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa.
In receiving his citation Vybz Kartel said, “Thank you to the Mayor, Ms. Grant, Thank you to the city. These proclamations mean a lot to me because I was in Canada the the hurricane hit…we went to Jamaica and mobilize we drama nd get things going. TO be honored this way is a pleasure.”
Last year Reggae icon Sizzla Kalonji received the Key to the City of Lauderhill and a U.S. Congressional Honor during Jamaica’s 63rd Independence Celebration on August 3 in Broward County. The city marked the occasion with the “Solid As A Rock” concert, featuring performers including Lady G, Admiral Tibet, Etana, Hal Anthony and Roy Rayon, backed by the Code Red Band.
The honor recognizes Sizzla’s influence beyond music, highlighting his lifelong advocacy for disadvantaged communities, African heritage, spirituality and unity within the global African diaspora. Known for his socially conscious lyrics, the artist—born Miguel Collins—has long promoted themes of empowerment, self-determination and Rastafari principles.
“I was emotionally moved. Touched by the gesture. Filled with joy and excitement. As my fans worldwide would be so happy,” Sizzla said, adding that the recognition affirms a deeper mission to reconnect African people with their roots
Meanwhile, The City of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, has officially proclaimed February 10 “Buju Banton Day” to honor the Grammy-winning reggae icon for his over three-decade contribution to music, culture, and social awareness.
Photo Credit: Luke BallentineThe proclamation was presented during Reggae Month by City Commissioner Karlene Maxwell-Williams, with additional honors from Broward County Commissioner Hazelle P. Rogers and Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick.
“Reggae music is more than entertainment — it is a voice for the people and a reflection of our heritage and resilience,” said Commissioner Karlene Maxwell-Williams. “Buju Banton’s music has inspired generations around the world, and it is an honor for the City of Lauderdale Lakes to recognize his cultural impact and celebrate his legacy during Reggae Month.”
Buju Banton has released has released 12 studio albums his career, starting with Stamina Daddy and Mr. Mention in 1992 and continuing through to Born for Greatness in 2023. He is highly regarded for his extensive discography, including the critically acclaimed album ‘Til Shiloh along with his hit singles like “Champion,” “Wanna Be Loved,” “Untold Stories,” “Destiny,” “Hills and Valleys,” and “Not an Easy Road.”
