Legacy in music is crucial because it bridges past artistic traditions with future generations, shapes cultural identity, and gives work meaning beyond commercial or short-term viral trends. That’s why VP Records is proud to present “Fig Tree” by The Wailers Trio, the first single from a brand-new conceptual album, Rastaman 50, highlighting the incredible legacy of The Wailers and fifty years of their pivotal solo albums from 1976.
In this modern-day interpretation of an album-only track from Bunny Wailer’s masterpiece Blackheart Man, two of Jamaica’s most exciting and original young artists, Blvk H3ro and Cen’c Love, capture the song’s essence and offer a fresh take on the revered classic.
Produced by Maxine Stowe, Dave Green & Jermaine Williams and recorded in The Wailers’ heartland of Trench Town, “Fig Tree” respectfully connects the roots with the future. Blvk H3ro’s impassioned lead vocal carries the song’s message of freedom to a new audience, and Cen’c Love, Bunny Wailer’s daughter, provides the perfect accompaniment, with her soulful sound bringing the song full circle.
The eagerly anticipated Rastaman 50 tribute album will be due for release on 6th of November to coincide with the anniversary of Emperor Haile Selassie’s coronation in Ethiopia in 1930. The album contains contemporary voicings of foundational reggae songs lifted from Bunny Wailer’s Blackheart Man, Peter Tosh’s Legalize It and Bob Marley’s Rastaman Vibration, as well as a selection of earlier songs from the group’s Upsetter period, by Kingston’s new wave of creatives Blvk H3ro, Dahvid Slur, J Written and Cen’c Love.
