The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) says it is stepping up efforts to combat vandalism and theft targeting critical infrastructure after a 42-year-old man appeared before the courts in connection with a stolen pipe investigation.

According to WASA, the accused was charged with receiving stolen goods following investigations led by the Authority’s Police Unit.

The charge relates to the alleged theft of fourteen lengths of ductile double-flange pipes owned by WASA and valued at approximately TT$189,000.

A Sergeant attached to the WASA Police Unit laid the charge.

The accused was granted bail in the sum of TT$240,000 with a surety and ordered to remain at his residence while reporting twice weekly to the Chaguanas Police Station. The matter was adjourned to the First Court in Chaguanas and is expected to resume on June 22.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, WASA described attacks on its infrastructure as direct threats to services relied upon daily by citizens and reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to vandalism, theft and illegal possession of Authority property.

WASA said the latest charge forms part of a broader enforcement campaign in response to repeated incidents affecting facilities across Trinidad and Tobago.

Investigations are continuing into several matters, including the recent vandalism of Tamana Well No. 1 between June 13 and 14.

The Authority also reminded the public that damaging public property is a criminal offence under Section 25 of the Summary Offences Act and Section 45 of the Malicious Damage Act, carrying penalties that may include fines and imprisonment.

WASA warned that persons involved in the theft, purchase, transportation, possession or concealment of stolen assets would face investigation and prosecution.

To strengthen enforcement, the Authority said it is expanding surveillance, increasing security operations and working with law enforcement agencies to disrupt criminal activity targeting public infrastructure.

Members of the public with information are encouraged to contact the WASA Vandalism Hotline at 496-6738.
