The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA), in partnership with the Ministry of Public Utilities, today officially launched a TT$20 million wastewater pipeline replacement project aimed at bringing long-awaited relief to the residents of Beetham Gardens.
The major infrastructure intervention seeks to resolve persistent, longstanding sewerage issues caused by the deterioration of the community’s main wastewater pipeline.
Leading a media engagement and worksite tour at the corner of 5th Street and Main Road, Minister in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Clyde Elder, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to delivering critical infrastructure improvements nationwide.
Elder emphasised that the project aligns directly with official mandates to provide proper services and modern infrastructure to citizens.
The scope of works involves replacing 569 linear feet of compromised wastewater pipeline along Main Road, specifically between 5th and 7th Streets. To minimize disruption to the roadway and the surrounding neighbourhood, contractors will employ advanced trenchless installation technology. This methodology allows the new 47-inch diameter pipeline to be laid approximately 20 feet below the surface, beneath the existing interceptor drain.
WASA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Dain Maharaj, stated that the initiative represents a significant effort to relieve local residents while upholding environmental compliance across Trinidad and Tobago. Maharaj noted that the selection of trenchless technology is vital for reducing surface disruption while achieving the necessary depth for the massive pipeline.
Sinohydro Corporation Limited has been contracted to execute the project. Active construction works are scheduled to commence in mid-August 2026, with a projected completion timeline of nine months.
During Thursday’s launch, media representatives toured the active site and engaged with engineering personnel regarding the technical execution of the project, which signals a major turnaround for the Beetham environment.
