Water taxi operators seek fare increase in Belize

Could sea travelers soon be paying more to travel by water taxi? The Belize Water Taxi Association has formally submitted a request for an increase in passenger fares.  Minister of Public Utilities, Logistics and Energy Michel Chebat confirmed that the application has been received. While the Minister did not disclose the size of the increase being sought, he indicated that the request will have to undergo the established review process before any decision is taken.  The application comes as operators continue to contend with the cost of fuel, maintenance and other expenses associated with providing marine transportation. Any increase, however, would also affect commuters who rely on water taxis to travel between the mainland and the islands.  Chebat says the request remains under consideration and that no fare adjustment has yet been approved.

Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities: “The request comes to the Belize Port Authority that governs that and it also falls under the ministry and I can tell you that we have also had discussions with all of the water taxis and we’re looking to find a way to work out a solution for them.”

Reporter: So they requested increases ? 

Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities: “There has been a request for some type of alleviation.”

Michel Chebat, Minister of Public Utilities: “That has been several months ago though.”

The Minister’s comments suggest that the concerns of both operators and passengers will need to be considered before a final determination is made./
