Tivoli Gardens remain in close pursuit of Waterhouse, as the race for the sixth play-off spot in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) continued yesterday with a narrow 2-1 win over Harbour View at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex.

Sixth-placed Waterhouse now have 55 points after a 2-0 win over Portmore, and stay one point clear of Tivoli in seventh.

Tivoli coach Jerome Waite said with the race for sixth heading to the wire, they have to continue winning their games.

“Today’s game was a good tactical one, and the fact that only three games remain in the competition, no one wants to lose.

“Harbour View are on the other end, where they have to earn points to ensure that they stay up. It wasn’t easy, but in the end we got two goals. It should gave been more, based on the opportunities we created, but we are still thankful for the win,” he said.

In an evenly contested first half, Harbour View had the first real effort on goal, but goalkeeper Nicholas Clarke parried Trayvone Reid’s free kick for a corner.

The home team took the lead after 28 minutes when Barrington Pryce rose above the Harbour View defence to steer home a header from a corner.

Harbour View threatened from another Reid free kick moments later, but, again, Clarke was equal to his low strike inside the far post. The visitors got the equaliser three minutes from the break from a free kick by Colorado Murray.

Tivoli were the better team after the interval and Lennox Russell dragged a shot wide after just four minutes.

GLORIOUS OPPORTUNITY

Pryce then had a glorious opportunity in the 65th minute but he put the chance wide of a gaping net, after Harbour View failed to clear a cross.

However, moments later Russell was brought down by goalkeeper Anthony Bennett in the box and Fuller fired home the penalty in the 73rd minute, to restore Tivoli’s lead.

Tivoli’s Pryce then planted a header wide in the 83rd and Alton Lewis toed a great chance wide in the 90th minute, as the home team looked to increase their advantage.

Harbour View are now locked on 33 points with Humble Lion, who drew 1-1 with Dunbeholden, and Chapelton, who play today.

Technical director of Harbour View, Ludlow Bernard, said it was always going to be a difficult task playing at the Edward Seaga Complex.

“We always knew coming here was going to be a difficult task. It is never an easy ground to get a result. As a matter of fact, Tivoli have gained points in all the games they have played here,” he commented.

“We knew it would have been hostile, but I was pretty confident we were up for the task. We had some very senior campaigners on the pitch and the mentality was very strong, and on another day maybe we would have gotten something out of this game,” Bernard said.
