Waterhouse FC stunned former Jamaica Premier League leaders Montego Bay United FC (MBU) 1-0 at Jarrett Park as the St James-based team played their first home game since Hurricane Melissa ravaged sections of western Jamaica, including their home field at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
In front of an intense crowd, Waterhouse’s Revaldo Mitchell scored the winning goal in the 35th minute.
The result leaves MBU in second on 26 points, the same as Racing United. Racing, however, have a superior goal difference. Waterhouse have climbed to sixth with 15 points.
Captain of Waterhouse Colorado Murray said after the recent backlash from triple losses, he is happy for the victory in a tough environment.
“Which team wouldn’t be happy? You travel to Montego Bay at the iconic Jarrett Park, which has been out of use sometime now, and spoil their fun,” said Murray, who graded his team’s performance at ‘100 per cent’.
“Our recent loss against Spanish Town Police was a hard one to take for us. The community gave us a backlash, so we worked hard for the three points, thank God,” added Murray.
Meanwhile, Xavier Gilbert, coach of MBU, said the team lacked fluency and patience in their performance.
“We didn’t have the fluency that we are used to and would have liked, and the surface didn’t contribute to that. I thought we made hasty decisions and turned over the ball,” said Gilbert.
“We really wanted something out of the game, and three points was the objective. We have our challenges and are overcoming them step by step, no excuses,” added Gilbert.
The homecoming game for MBU was planned to be one of togetherness and general admission was free for fans. It was the club’s way to reconnect with the fans.
Following Mitchell’s 35th-minute strike which fired his team in front, MBU had several good opportunities to equalise, but Waterhouse’s goalkeeper Roje Williams produced several brilliant saves.
In St Elizabeth, Treasure Beach FC make a winning return after two months out when they blanked Portmore United 2-0.
Treasure Beach were given time to rebuild after the destruction caused by Hurricane Melissa in the parish.
After being warmly welcomed by fans, Jhanni Flemmings opened the scoring for Treasure Beach in the 61st minute. In added time (90 plus 10) Daniel Hardy hammered home to secure a comfortable win.
The win puts Treasure Beach in 11th spot with 12 points.
Kemar Ricketts, coach of Treasure Beach said: “The boys have been working really hard training and this win shows resilience and determination after everything we have been through.”
