Jamaica’s reigning world 400m champion Antonio Watson says he’s confident that his season opening performance at the Camperdown Classic at the national stadium this weekend has set him up nicely for the rest of the season.

Watson clocked 46.03 seconds in his first race in months, after missing most of last season due to injury.

The former Petersfield High School standout crossed the line first in one of five segments of the 400m at the national stadium, but his time was second fastest on the night.

Watson missed the Paris Olympic games, but says the long layoff could be a blessing in disguise.

About the performance itself, Watson says he was satisfied with the outcome.

Meanwhile Zandrion Barnes of Sprintech stunned the field when he won his section of the men’s 400m in a world leading 44.97 seconds

The 23 year old Barnes came within 7 one hundredths of a second of his lifetime best of 44.90 seconds and says he knew he was capable of that performance given what he’s doing in training.
