FOLLOWING HIS team’s 1-1 draw with Molynes United in Sunday’s Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL) fixture, Waterhouse head coach Marcel Gayle said his players will need to stop conceding the way they are to stay in the top six.
A misfiring Waterhouse unit needed a last-minute Atapharoy Bygrave goal to rescue a point at home as they sit sixth in the standings with 34 points tallied.
Waterhouse had dominated much of the contest and had several opportunities to put the game to bed early in the proceedings.
However, they failed to capitalise on several of their chances and found themselves going behind in the 82nd minute when Jason Wright curled an effort through a crowd of defenders and around the diving goalkeeper.
Gayle was critical of his team’s performance, citing the conceded goal as a result of schoolboy defending from his players.
“We were disappointing and again in front of our home crowd, we were abysmal,” said Gayle about the performance after the match.
“I think we dominated the possession and dominated the proceedings but again, we conceded from a schoolboy error and we can’t concede these goals in a top-flight league. We’re giving up silly goals and there is no excuse for the goal we conceded.”
COACH WARY
Gayle’s comments came in light of Waterhouse’s third consecutive game without a win as the team from Drewsland are on a run of two losses and a draw.
The head coach is wary of the league’s chasing pack as Waterhouse sit just inside the top six, the final qualification spot for the JPL play-offs.
Hot on their tails are an in-form Racing United, who have won their last four games, and are trailing Waterhouse by six points.
“It is very important [to win these games],” he said. “The chasing group is catching up to us so we have to make sure that we take the games that are at home and the games that we are supposed to win, we have to win those games.”
With the JPL fixtures set to see a short break due to Reggae Boyz upcoming friendlies against Trinidad and Tobago, Gayle will be using the opportunity to ensure his players will return to the field at their very best.
He explained that they have been experiencing their share of injuries, but believes the break in fixtures will give his players the rest they need to recover ahead of their next assignment.
“We welcome the break because we have little niggling injuries around the squad. I think probably around half the squad today were injured and we still showed fight.”
