The West Indies suffered a crushing 238-run defeat to England at Edgbaston on Thursday in the first game of their three match One-Day International, ODI, series.
The West Indies were set 401 for victory. But their chase for the victory target was a non-event. The men from the Caribbean were easily blown away for 162 in 26.2 overs.
Brydon Carse’s spectacular catch to dismiss captain Shai Hope for 25 was the highlight of the chase, as Jaydon Seales top-scored with 29. Keacy Carty scored 22 against Saqib Mahmood and Jamie Overton three wickets each and two wickets for Adil Rashid.
England’s 400 is the sixth time they’ve reached or surpassed those runs in ODIs as they battered an ordinary West Indies bowling attack which would have conceded far more runs had it not been for three spectacular catches.
Jacob Bethell 82 off 53 balls, captain Harry Brook, 58, Joe Root, 57, and Ben Duckett, 67, led the hosts to 400 for 8. Seales took four wickets for 84 and Alzarri Joseph took two wickets for 69.
West Indies coach Daren Sammy admits they were a distant second to England.
