Wheelchair Clinic Restores Mobility to Nearly Two Dozen Belizeans

A wheelchair clinic held today at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Cemetery Road restored mobility and independence to nearly two dozen Belizeans, through a coordinated humanitarian partnership serving communities nationwide.  The clinic, a collaboration between the Belize Red Cross and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, resulted in the distribution of 19 brand new wheelchairs to individuals in need. Love News spoke with Dan Mills, a volunteer with LDS Charities, who is also a physical therapist and one of the trainers involved in the clinic. Mills explained that the initiative focuses not only on providing wheelchairs, but on ensuring they are properly fitted and that recipients are trained in safe and effective use.

Among today’s recipients was Cary Moguel, better known as Betty, who shared how receiving a properly fitted wheelchair has made a meaningful difference in her life. She said the new wheelchair has made daily activities easier and significantly improved her mobility and independence.

Organizers noted that while wheelchairs may not always be immediately available, individuals who qualify are placed on a waiting list and contacted once new equipment becomes available, ensuring continued support for those in need. The program relies heavily on trained volunteers, who undergo specialized training to provide accurate guidance and assistance to wheelchair users.
