A 65-year-old woman died after she was struck by a van along the Southern Main Road in Marabella on Tuesday.
Police identified the victim as Jameela Basrally of Soledad Road West, Claxton Bay.
According to initial reports, Basrally was walking near Market Street when she was hit by a panel van driven by a 51-year-old man. Investigators were told the driver swerved to avoid colliding with another vehicle before striking the pedestrian.
Basrally was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital, where she later died while receiving treatment.
Videos circulating on social media showed the woman lying at the side of the road near the fence of JTA Supermarket as members of the public tried to assist her before emergency responders arrived. Her son was also at the scene.
Basrally would have celebrated her 66th birthday on September 2.
Marabella police are investigating the incident.
