KELVIN BROWN’S stoppage-time goal helped Jamaica’s under-15 Reggae Boyz turned back Curaçao 1-0 in their final League B, Group D game in the Concacaf U15 Championships at the Stadion CD Guillermo Trinidad in Oranjestad, Aruba, yesterday.
The young Reggae Boyz ended the group stage with maximum nine points, six more than Belize, Curaçao, and Aruba.
The result also means Jamaica advanced to the semi-finals, where they will square off against regional rivals Trinidad and Tobago on Friday.
After a cagey start, Curaçao created the first real chance when Quyvonn Sluis floated a ball into the box, but Jyano Rojer could not place his header on target after towering over the Jamaican defence.
Jamaica would create their first opportunity moments later when striker Kelvin Brown broke away down the right and elected to shoot from a tight angle, even though Carlando Morris was unmarked at the far post.
Morris then got a great chance minutes later after making space for himself in the area but blasted over from 12 yards.
Brown had his best chance of the half in the 28th minute, but his curling right-footed effort was parried away by Curaçao goalkeeper Jean-Jacques Ricardo.
Curaçao also had a good chance towards the end of the period; however, Giordyson Koeiman’s shot was not strong enough to really trouble Jaheime Gray in goal.
Both teams continued to trade attacks after the break and created good openings they both failed to take advantage of.
However, Jamaica got better as the half wore on and had good opportunities through Tevin Savage, Morris, Davion Clarke, and Kenrick Brown, while Kelvin Brown blasted a good chance over the top from the edge of the box and headed a half-chance over the bar.
Still, the young Boyz grabbed the all-important goal in added time when Kelvin Brown slipped Samuel Taylor through on goal on a counter-attack, and although Taylor’s shot hit the bar, it came back into play and Brown was on hand to tuck home the rebound.
