Young Women Showcase Innovation at Belize’s First National STEAM Festival

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology hosted its inaugural STEAM Festival in San Ignacio over the weekend, giving young women from across the country the opportunity to showcase innovative solutions to challenges facing their communities. The event featured projects developed through the Women in Fourth Industrial Revolution, or 4iR, Component of the Skills for the Future Programme. Drawing on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, students transformed ideas learned in the classroom into practical innovations while demonstrating creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking. While attendees only witnessed the final presentations, the event was the culmination of months of preparation. Dr. Consuelo Godfrey says careful planning was essential to creating a meaningful experience for the students.

The Women in 4iR Programme is supported by the Global Partnership for Education and the Inter-American Development Bank, in collaboration with the Education Development Center. Through the initiative, approximately one thousand primary and secondary school girls across Belize are expected to gain the knowledge and skills needed to confidently explore opportunities in STEAM-related fields. For Dr. Godfrey, the festival was never just about displaying finished projects. She says the goal was to create an environment where young women could discover their potential, apply what they had learned, and see themselves as future innovators capable of shaping Belize’s future.

The Ministry hopes the festival will continue to grow in the years ahead, inspiring more girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics while preparing them for opportunities in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
