Popular Jamaican YouTuber and podcaster Jhaedee “Jaii Frais” Richards is recovering in hospital after reportedly disarming one of his attackers during a violent incident at a party on Sunday night.
The incident occurred around 9:30 pm during festivities at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre new to the Prime Minister’s office in Hope Road St. Andrew, where the “Big Wall” party washing held.
According to reports, Richards had just arrived at the event with his girlfriend and went to the restroom shortly after entering. Upon exiting, he was allegedly confronted by music producer and artiste manager Jahvel “Jahvy Ambassador” Morrison, someone said to be known to him.
Police sources indicate that the situation escalated rapidly when Richards was struck in the face and then attacked by a group of approximately 15 men. During the assault, at least two firearms were drawn.
One of the attackers reportedly pointed a gun at Richards. In the chaos, he managed to disarm the individual, taking control of the weapon. Investigators say that Morrison—who is a licensed firearm holder—then allegedly pulled a Glock 9mm pistol from his waistband and opened fire in Richards’ direction.
Fearing for his life, Richards reportedly returned fire using the weapon he had seized before fleeing the scene.
He later sought assistance from a police officer at the venue and handed over the firearm. It was only afterward that he realised he had been shot in the lower back. He was subsequently transported to the University Hospital of the West Indies, where he remains under police guard.
Two other individuals were injured in the shooting. They have been identified as Jeremy Watson, a 39-year-old operations manager from Phoenix, Arizona, who is believed to have been an innocent bystander, and Trevor Twaite, a 36-year-old Kingston 6 resident reportedly associated with the entertainment group “450.” Twaite remains in critical condition and is undergoing surgery.
Following the incident, Morrison was taken into police custody and is being held at the Half-Way Tree Police Station as investigations continue.
Police confirmed that a Glock nine-millimetre pistol was seized from the producer, while a second 9mm firearm—the one Richards reportedly took during the altercation—was handed over to authorities.
Members of the St Andrew Central Scene of Crime Unit processed the scene and recovered spent shell casings, a blood sample, and a white sneaker, all of which are expected to form part of the investigation.
No charges have been announced so far, but police say inquiries are ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the shooting at what was intended to be a celebratory event.
