As the 2027 Carnival band launch season gets going, large band YUMA is set to unveil its 2027 presentation, Ferocious: Fierce by Nature, this coming Saturday at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA).
The band says its presentation will explore “instinct, resilience, passion and the untamed spirit within human nature,” and is inspired by the raw power and beauty of the natural world.
A statement by the band said that Ferocious seeks to capture what organisers describe as the “animal instincts and endurance of humanity”, encouraging masqueraders to embrace confidence, strength and unapologetic self-expression.
YUMA director Tanya Gomes said the theme will reflect a forceful expression of identity and emotion rooted in nature and human experience.
“We live with a fiery passion that cannot be tamed. We travel a road where energy is contagious, where resilience meets every challenge, where drive and determination refuse to be denied and where love is always bold and fierce,” Gomes said.
“We flirt with fantasy and we dance with danger because we accept one simple truth: there is no beauty if there is no beast. We will swim upstream or fly against the wind if we have to. These instincts cannot be caged. Every stripe will be earned. This animal cannot be contained.”
“Ferocious is a mindset,” Gomes said. “It represents the strength that emerges when we refuse to be confined by expectations. It is power without apology. It is determination without limits. It is the freedom to be exactly who you are.”
The event is expected to feature storytelling, entertainment, fashion and spectacle.
In a shift from the traditional audition format, the band transformed its annual casting call into an immersive brand experience aligned with the theme, with sessions held in both North and South Trinidad, and attracted more than 400 aspiring models.
“We wanted our casting experience to reflect those same values by bringing auditions closer to communities and opening our doors to everyone,” Gomes said.
“The response exceeded all expectations,” Gomes said. “We met hundreds of individuals who embodied the energy of this year’s theme. They were fearless, expressive and unapologetically themselves. That is exactly what Ferocious represents.”
This is the second of the large bands to present costumes for 2027, following Paparazzi last Saturday.
