As Jamaica celebrated 63 years of independence, Reggae singer Ziggy Marley is questioning whether the country is truly free.
On his verified Instagram account, Ziggy Marley posted a picture of the Jamaican flag along with a lengthy caption that read in part, “As Jamaica celebrates its 63 years of independence, there are still questions as to what it means to be an independent country.”
He went on to ask, “Can Jamaica be independent and still be a part of the British Commonwealth at the same time? What are the rights of Jamaican citizens to access their own beaches and rivers? Do Jamaicans know their rights?”
In the comments section, a page dedicated to the late Reggae legend Bob Marley co-signed his son’s stance by quoting lines from Bob’s 1973 hit Get Up Stand Up: “Stand up for your rights.”
As is customary, a huge celebration was held at the National Stadium on August 6 to mark Jamaica 63.
Jamaica became independent on August 6, 1962, while remaining a member of the British Commonwealth.
