Veteran lover's rock singer, Leroy Gibbons (real name Leroy Gibbon) reportedly died earlier today in Lucea, Hanover.
Legendary producer, Lloyd Woodrowe James, better known as King Jammy, told The Gleaner that he received a call at about 7 a.m. to say that Gibbons "drop down and died".
"Mi shock ... mi shock bad. Early this morning dem wake mi up and tell mi. I can't really say whether or not he was in studio ... I'll have to call them back to verify," King Jammy told The Gleaner. "He was a close person to us and we are going to miss him."
Leroy Gibbons, who resides between Jamaica and Canada, has been in the island doing some studio work.
King Jammy's studio in Waterhouse is his original base and recently he has been doing some recordings there with Jammy's son, John John.
"All of his hit songs is me produce dem. I produced songs like Magic Moment and also the first album Leroy ever did. He was here with us ... and just last week John John mix off the song them was working on and send it to Leroy and him asked for a dub version. Is a sad day ... a very sad day," declared King Jammy, who is still processing the news.
Originally the lead vocalist for a cappella group, The Gospel Proclaimers, a young Leroy Gibbons performed to sold-out audiences across Jamaica. He would leave the group to carve out a solo career as a lover's rock singer and met King Jammy, who steered him on a path of success. He released hits such as Magic Moment, Cupid and Stir it up.
Leroy Gibbons performed in January at Rebel Salute at Plantation Cove in St Ann, where he gave a splendid performance.
