20-Year-Old Olympic Hopeful Faces Deportation From Canada

A 20-year-old Jamaican sprinter is facing deportation from Canada after his family’s asylum request was denied.

Tamarri Lindo is a hurdler who attends York University. He and his family were scheduled to be deported next week.

However, in a post on social media site X, formerly Twitter, the family’s attorney, Aidan Simardone, says the deportation order has been deferred by one month.

According to a CTV report out of Canada, the Lindo family fled Jamaica to Toronto in 2019 after three attempts on his father’s life.

Tamarri’s father George says he was a political activist affiliated with the People’s National Party.

George said he was shot multiples times and had his throat slashed.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, IRCC, denied the Lindo’s asylum request. According to CTV, the IRCC says it’s not persuaded the attacks on Mr Lindo are linked to his alleged political affiliation or activities.

The IRCC reportedly said crime is widespread throughout Jamaica, and any risks the Lindos face are not personalised, but instead one faced by all people living in Jamaica.

Tamarri was hoping to make Canada’s team for the Paris Olympics.

If the attorney’s push is unsuccessful, the Lindo family and their five-year-old daughter, who was born in Canada will be sent back to Jamaica.
