Andre Russell to Retire From International Cricket

Jamaica’s Andre Russell will retire from international cricket after the second T20 International series against Australia on his home ground at Sabina Park, next Tuesday.

Russell was on Wednesday named in a West Indies 16 man squad for the five game series against the Aussies.

However he will only play in the first two to coincide with his retirement on home soil after the second game.

Russell will then be replaced in the side by Matthew Forde for the other three games in St. Kitts.

The 2012 and 2016 world cup winner will end his career with 86 T20 Internationals to go along with a solitary test and 56 One Day Internationals.

President of Jamaica Cricket Association, Donovan Bennett, says Russell’s presence will be missed.

Russell will be the second high profile after Nicholas Pooran to call time on their career within the last two months.

Russell had indicated before the last T20 World Cup that he would retire from the sport, but was persuaded to extend his career by coach Daren Sammy.

Bennett says there’s a myriad of strength that Russell possesses in his arsenal that made him one of the best limited overs cricketers in the world.
